Eau Claire Boys

In 1959, the Scouts changed their name to Eau Claire Boys Drum & Bugle Corps. For the next 10 years, the ECB traveled throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa, with trips as far as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Canada.

The uniforms & Aussie-style hats were picked out by Walt Brown, apparently influenced by the Scout House Bugle Band of Preston, Ontario. In addition, the ECB marching style - incorporating an exaggerated arm swing - was influenced by Scout House.

EAU CLAIRE, WIS. - With the slogan, “Have Bugle, Will Travel,” and a well-disciplined and well-trained organization, the Eau Claire Boys Drum and Bugle Corps is making a name for itself, not only in Northern Wisconsin, but throughout the Northwest.

In the past two and one-half years it has made 41 appearances and traveled 7,000 miles. The current schedule is a busy one.

Saturday, the corps was one of the headliners at the Sparta Dairy celebration. The Sunday before that, the group appeared at a celebration in Somerset. The corps also will be in the line of march July 18, in the Minneapolis Aquatennial parade.

It appeared at the St. Paul Winter Carnival last year, and at the recent state convention of Lions clubs in La Crosse.

The success of the drum and bugle corps can be credited to a united community effort. Their smart uniforms were obtained through the help of the local consumers cooperative shopping center. Other Eau Claire civic groups and commercial firms have shouldered the burden of transportation and equipment.

The community motive in getting behind the corps was not solely the idea of organizing a group that could play in key and beat in time. The corps booster club, made up of parents who hold meetings each month to back up the corps, have training and guidance of the group in mind.

The corps, with booster club backing, is a self-supporting, non-profit organization. It has a board of directors, elected by the booster club.

Walter Brown, executive director, says that literally hundreds of Eau Claire citizens have had a hand in its success.
