Eau Claire Boys

In 1959, the Scouts changed their name to Eau Claire Boys Drum & Bugle Corps. For the next 10 years, the ECB traveled throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa, with trips as far as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Canada.

The uniforms & Aussie-style hats were picked out by Walt Brown, apparently influenced by the Scout House Bugle Band of Preston, Ontario. In addition, the ECB marching style - incorporating an exaggerated arm swing - was influenced by Scout House.

MR. PAGE HONORED!

A tribute to our program and especially the young men that result from our efforts was given Wednesday, January 18, when our own LaMont (Cub) Page was honored by our local J.C. organization. He was unanimously chosen as the outstanding young man of the year and was presented with a beautiful plaque honoring his outstanding service to our community. This award was especially meaningful as he alone of all the awards presented that evening received a standing ovation from the entire audience of over 300 people.

Mr. Page, without a doubt has demonstrated a quality of loyalty and leadership that we would like all our boys to show. His exceptional talent in both arranging music and drill as well as the ability to teach our boys the correct method of playing that music on their instruments has contributed to the high standing of our Corps in the ranks of competing Corps. The respect shown this young man by our entire organization demonstrates his ability to merit that respect. Mr. Page does not only teach our boys how to be horn blowers, but insists that each boy have a full knowledge of the fundamentals of music and their instruments. Our boys, because of the teaching ability of Mr. Page, are exposed to the possibility of continuing their musical knowledge into the field of music both as instructors as well as performers.

On behalf of all our organization, and especially his students, we add our heartfelt thanks to the honor he has received, and wish him all success in his new career. Mr. Page has been appointed director of the Bloomer High School Band and will also teach choir and chorus. He plans to continue his efforts with our boys, for which we are very thankful.

NEWS FROM THE DARKOWS:

At the January parents meeting, Mr. Brown read an informative and highly entertaining letter from Winston Darkow, father of former Prep drum major Adrian, recounting the family’s experiences during their trip to Alaska and their subsequent settlement there. To the Darkows we send greetings. Let us hear from you again.

AIRMAN COMMENDED

Former Corps member Richard D. Carroll, Airman 2nd Class, received special recognition for his devotion to duty from CWO Wm. D. Berky, 8th Air Force Band Director. He was singled out for his consistently high displays of initiative and dedication, and won a PRIDE certificate and a gilt-edge 3-day pass from the 380th Strategic Aerospace Wing Commander.

There are still a few sets of recordings, handsomely jacketed with pictures of the participating corps, made at the “Drums in the Night” pageant in Rhinelander. See Mr. Brown if you are interested.

(Webmaster’s note: If you have one of these recordings, please E-mail me!)
